Performance Tournament(s)

This tournament strategy was placed on the table by the Velocity Advisory Board to possibly define where a team might fit into a division. They are not practice tournaments...They are not to see how the tournament runs. They are placement tournaments for those teams that think that they might be better in one division than another division.
The tournament will allow for the players(teams) to choose their division and then play against other teams in the same division. If a particular team does not place very well in that division by constantly being eliminated, then that team needs to move down a bracket. If a particular team constantly wins in their bracket/division, then they may want to move up a bracket. Simple!
If a team feels that they are where they need to be (Rookie, Novice, etc.), they shouldn't play in the Performance Tournament.
I had an e-mail come to me from a player whose team participated in tournament play in 2005 as Beginners. By NPPL standards and for the X-Ball tournaments at Velocity, that team will now be classed Rookie,
and they were happy with that decision.

Fees/Prizes

Krispy,
Once the prizes, events, deals, etc., have been set, they won't be changed.
I can understand the possibilities of problems coming up with the teams and we would be happy to transfer funds to another team so the team with the problem doesn't lose the cash.
However, one of the things that will definitely happen for the x-ball tournaments, is that the upper prizes will be awarded to the top teams.
For a top team to qualify for those prizes, they will need to participate in all four tournaments. The x-ball point system doesn't allow for big totals at the end of the tournaments.
The other thing we will do is set up pre-registration for the year, set a $ amount up front to play the four tournaments, and allow the teams to make additional payments 30 days prior to the event. We have talked in Board meetings about this, and it will be implemented.
One other thing, the teams that book for the year will receive bigger discounts on paint. These are all things that a team must consider.

I think this is a good idea. Teams that pay for all 4 tournaments before the season starts get discount on paint and the entry cost is reduced. Team that pay 30 days prior to the tourney get discount on paint and pay full entry, vise versa. And last sign uppers pay everything in full. But with this, paint needs to be cheap. Paint is very expensive as it is and with xball it doesn't make it easier. I think making a BYOP and high entry MIGHT be a good idea, or somewhat lower of a entry and we buy paint from you. Just a thought

I agree

I agree with jordan. A higher entry with a bring your own paint tourney set up is the way to go. If you dont want certain types, tell them not to bring them. But X-ball is a high priced game. Allot of teams wont be fiscally able to afford it.

First of all, you guys are basing all conclusions about x-ball on previous experiences. If you BYOP to the tournaments, where are you buying the paint? You have to pay for it somewhere, unless you have your own manufacturing set-up. You need to go back through this forum and read what we have wrote about paint. I can get cheap low grade paint if that is what everyone wants??? I can get whatever brand we need or the teams want.
The point is this...teams that elect to play x-ball tournaments will be getting a whole new experience and format.
If you play a standard 5-man NPPL tournament, how much paint do you use? You use what is necessary to eliminate your opponent! If your opponent is using a higher grade of paint than you, does that change the possible results of the game? Of course it could! If you have the desire and you are fortunate enough to play NPPL or PSP x-ball tournaments, they may have requirements about using field paint. At the present time, it would be hard to get paint sponsors to come to Utah Tournaments. If that would happen, then we could do a BYOP tournament. Can't do it right now! But you give us another day or so, we'll tell you how and why a lot of this BYOP will not be necessary!!!

NPPL and PSP are bring your own paint. It just looks like field paint because all the major paint brands are on site selling their product so the teams don't have to haul it themselves. Both leagues make their money on high entry fees and promtional efforts.

When we are talking about most tournaments being FPO, it would be in reference to most indiviudal field tournaments, (like UXPL). For a tournament set up locally that does not have vendors, or as many sponsors, then it is generally FPO.

It takes quite a substantial amount of money to put on events like these. But even with the x-ball format, we are going to try our hardest to make paint VERY affordable, and keep the prices VERY competitive to what everyone generally expects to pay to play in a tournament in Utah.

The way we are trying to set up the format is not the same as any regular X-ball game. We are changing just a few things to help conserve paint, but still allow for the same gameplay.

***Ramping or Semi-Auto***... we are still evaluating this, and we wouldnt mind getting as much input as possible from the local players before we decide.
