After the prelims, put the winning teams in order of points from the highest to the lowest. If any ties decide the better record by how fast their games were won. Then divide the number of teams by how many divisions you want. For instance, if you have 18 teams total, the top 6 are the upper division, next 6 the middle and the bottom 6 the lower division.
The advantage to this is it's hard to stack a team for any division except for the upper because you don't know where the cut off line is and you don't have to worry about classification. It's also easier to plan for teams that sign late because you don't have to put them in a classification.

Well the problem with that would be determining a "lesser or upper team," and making the decision if that player is considered Upper or whatever. I think this will lead to confusing results, similar to Allen's older classification (View people as good or not, then put them into that classifciation--not by the actual classfication) (BTW Not meant as a diss to Allen or anything)

The problem with this is you are penalizing teams that practice on regular basic and work hard to be good. If they are a rookie team they should play as a rookie team not put into a open team because they are good. I recomend using a clasification system like the 2006 xpsl is going to use. It will be out in December and and should be easy to inforce, and not discriminate against someone who is good.

General outline, but not final...still have questions being resolved.
Beginner - no tournament experience
Rookie - 1 year tournament play
Novice - 2 years " "
Amateur - more than two years

Fez, you are not deciding who is in which bracket, it is determined by how well u play in the tournament preliminaries which will decide which bracket u are placed in for the finals.
Skinny, that is exactly the problem with trying to classify people that do not play in the XPSL, which is probably half the players or more. Where do u put them and how do u classify them. Also u have some rookie teams that just started playing local events last year. This year they are novs and you're going to put them against an XPSL nov team?
I don't see how u can use nat'l classifications when not everyone plays those events.
What complaint could a team have with this format? They got put into the wrong bracket? How could they say that when that's is how they played that day and that was the competition level for the day also.
Could they complain about stacking a team? no. The more u stack your team the higher the bracket u will be put in.(theoretically)
If u had 3 different brackets to start with and put teams there before the tournament, like usual, and say u only have 2 am teams show up for this particular tournament. Now, where are u going to put those teams? You either have to put them in with the novs or tell them they can't play. That's penalizing also. which happens alot on the local level.
With the format I mentioned it wouldn't matter, four of the better nov teams would move into the upper bracket because that is where the level of competition is for this particular tournament.
Personally I would rather place 6th in an upper bracket than 2nd in a lower bracket. Which means u were the 6th best team in the tournament. And 2nd place in the middle bracket might get a ribbon, but they placed 8th with alot less competition.

I thought the efforts were being made to get a higher quality tournament paintball in the state. If you continue to state were a player or team falls in clasification by how good or bad he or she is you won't get any out of town teams nor will you get any of the structured utah teams to come out and play. Sponsors arn't going to pay for their team to partisipate in an event were classification is a judgement call. Bottom line is the fewer teams that sign up the more it costs per team.

I don't see his classification as a judgement call. It's a performance call. I don't agree with classification based on years of play. I think it should be based on performance not just how long you have been going to tounaments.

Being based on performance is the biggest pile of crap. Say you have been playing tournaments for one year, but you bang so much anus that you beat players that are amazing and high ranked. It would only be fair to let the rookie play rookie, and not make him play with the higher ranked players.

QFT This is so true. I hate that how oh its not "FAIR" that you are playing in your OWN division and smoking everyone because you practiced hard and worked hard to learn and be better. You should be in where you are classified this ups the competition level in the tourney and forces those teams they are beating to work harder. This is like saying a college football team that is winning every game cant play cause its too hard for the other teams. WELL THE REASON THEY ARE WINNING IS BECAUSE THEY ARE PRACTICING HARDER THEN THE OTHER TEAMS! just my .02
