I agree with Roberto if we could all introduce a couple new paintball and keep them interested and as other players do things to help also such as eliminating cheating, at a paintball field that will remain nameless this last weekend I watch 2 newbs get absolutly lit up and bonus balled, and several of the better players on the field wipe and continue playing. I think also think there are some of the better players around that think it is fun to shoot noobs. For example when I was going to play on Friday night as I was walking from the parking lot into the field we heard a couple players talking, as another as they were unloading their gear, say in thier little thugish tones "ah ya look at all the noobs", they actually were excited to go in and shoot them. I'm not saying that we shouldn't shoot them but rather give them advise and help them to learn, thats what got me interested and kept me interested in paintball. I think the majority of us are not guilty of these actions, but after I left the field last weekend I thought what are the rest of us doing to stop it? I think to many of us expect the refs to do all the calling and not police ourselves enough, but any way enough of my ranting. Thanks for all the post so far, the concerns are all things that we have thought about and are considering in our decision, we are by no means rushing this, we also are teaming up with a couple non-paintball affiliated businesses, please keep the suggestions and advise coming!!!

I was there to see Velocity PB open and I watched as they suffered through their first year. They had a lot of energy and they truely felt that their field would be the most amazing thing to happen to the paintball scene in Utah. Enthusiasm does not always pay off however... Many times, only a few players, or sometimes no players at all would show up to play, even on saturdays. I geuss what I'm saying is that if you open a field, there is a possibility that nobody will play there.

I was at Velocity almost every weekend in its first year of operation. While I do agree that there were weekends that were slow, the next weekend would yeild 50-60 players. Go figure... One thing we did realize is that we were staying open too long (9:00 am--8:00 pm). One thing I witnessed almost every weekend was people coming in at different intervals. We would have one group show up at 9:00 in the morning and then another group at maybe 11:00, but by 2-3:00 they were tired and ready to go home..just as more groups of people were showing up.
Soo, what would happen some weekends was people showing up in the morning and not have many other people to play- so they would leave. But then, two hours later another big group would show up which would have made for a big group had the earlier group came a bit later or hung around.
As the year went on, our groups would generally show up around the same times, but to help ((hopefully)) solve the problem this year-- we are going to have a set time for being open from 10:00-5:00 on saturdays 4:00-8:00 on Friday. We hope by doing this that people will hopefully show up within a few hours of each other or at the same time.

Dont get me wrong, we had some good crowds at Velocity this past year and we hope to be able to give more back to them with the additions that we are making to the field this year. By April, our Riverside field, and Urban town will be expanded. And the Island will have many more bunkers (with a few other secret additions) to make it a really fun field to play. It will definately be a very scenario-friendly field! 🙂

I mention this because, while I do agree with some comments made about the riskiness of starting a field/shop in Utah- If you are going to do it and hopefully have a chance- you have to introduce something different and give back to the paintball community by putting money into the field for expansions and new features.

The problem with introducing people into tournament paintball is the money. I've got at least 6 people started into tournament paintball (started a team from scratch before joining BG) but they hardly ever play because they can't afford it.

It would be great to see another field open in Utah, but like Allen said it's not an easy thing to do.

Ok as far as policing this activity we almost always back in missouri had 2 groups running( we had 100-200players almost everyday) yes it is harder on the refs but not that much harder u run one group of esperaniced and one group of non not so thats how we stoped the over shooting and stuff bc all of us where xball players so we get over shot we keep waking I can think of a few times playing with even new players walking off the field I got shot 50 + times no big deal to me. as far as cheating goes u will never stop it never I ahte to say this but it has become part of the game especially when playing national events I know back home if u had tape of someone cheating that was gold just bc u could nail that person for it and if someone got cuaght cheating at practice they werent allowed to play the next event so that helped alot to.

hmmm

just a thought but has anyone gone to the city council or whomever you would have to in order to ask if they would be willing to make or help with the funds to make a paintball park... ya know kinda like a skate park. Maybe we as a pb community could make a petition to have one made somewhere. 😕 .... 🙂

Allen brings up some good points. I have seen fields close from lack of players, politics, etc.

I know a lot of people who have dropped out of tourney ball (and rec ball) because of the cost. Utah businesses don't exactly pay out the big bucks to employees. Thus Utahns tend to be more frugal. I graduated from college last year and am having trouble finding a decent paying job in UT.

I think reball would attract me a bit more then actual paintball. It would be nice to go play fora hour or two hour block session. If you paid to play for a couple hours , you would run drills one after the other andall the time inbetween wouldnt be talk time, then you could talk after.

I think some people get turned off because games or the time in between games sometimes is extensive and sitting around is no fun.

If teams

gotta go... add more and make it more clear later

I will tell you guys our main focus right now is on reballs. And an outdoor field in the summer that will use paintballs. We are brainstorming ways to prevent cheating, let us know of ideas that you guys have to prevent cheating IF we did decide to use reballs.
