A co-location is just a server that we provide located at an ISP. It has a dedicated connection and offers the presence of backup generators and other such luxuries we don't have in our own homes. We pay quite a bit of money out of our pockets to have this server located there and it only has our personal websites on it.

Co-Location The point Neil is making is that he owns the server box its a private server for his company. The only public webiste on this server was 801paintball so its very clear that the attack was targeted at 801paintball.
Someone who is very net savy understood that a local ISP did not have enough bandwith to handle a large scale Denial of Service attack so they attacked the only weak link they could find. That being the ISP pipeline going to Neil's server. .. Neil if I erred in my comments please correct and forgive oh magnus alpha geek. __________________ -Allen Turner, Paintball Evangelist (ret) Owner Millennium Paintball Producter of Paintball Scenario Games Paradox Games Promoter Utah Extreme Paintball League Last edited by Allen Turner : 07-14-2004 at 05:19 PM.

Yes but Quote:
Yes I was hacked but it was not targeted at me specifically, it was a security problem with the provider they had hundreds of sites hacked. It was some Palastinian wingnuts. Some garbage about supporting Israel. Whatever, not my problem... It was not related, IMO. No a Dos'd attack like this was targeted, someone had to go out deliberatly take control of server(s) somewhere and tell it to target 801paintball with thousands of requests a second. Unfortunately there are idiots who deliberatly leave servers available for this in 3rd world countries where it can't be tracked easily. But you have to be well connected in the internet world to do this stuff, or so I am told. So tracking malicious attacks can be difficult unless law enforcement gets involved and can force people, at least US companies to turn over records, of course if attacks come from overseas then you cant get any information. Again someone much smarter than me can explain this if I am incorrect, this is just what I have gathered talking to people about this attack. . __________________ -Allen Turner, Paintball Evangelist (ret) Owner Millennium Paintball Producter of Paintball Scenario Games Paradox Games Promoter Utah Extreme Paintball League Last edited by Allen Turner : 07-14-2004 at 05:46 PM.

I would explain, but frankly, I'm lazy. Here's a link to an SF article about Denial of Service attacks though. It's about a year and a half old, but nothing has changed.

......::::::Vampires Amoung us::::::.......... OK Neil I read the article last night right before bed and this morning I had a paranormal revelation experience....
As I was waking this morning and as my mind started to enter the real world form the dream world I realized that the DDoS is the same as the Legend of Dracula. The similarities are eerie. One controling master who secretly infects and controls others.. The fact that the electronic system patterns are the same as the Human patters is just spooky.... So DDoS'ers are in fact real Vampires at least in behavior... Kinda erie huh.. OK lets put some Garlic on your server .. __________________
