ok i voted for dells website and totally awesome. first off you can only buy dell from their website so yeah. plus i think you should build it instead of a premade one. second no best buy i worked there enough saidm compusa no cause they know nothing. third HP and Compaq are the same company, HP owns compaq. e-machines NO not a very good quality. i would go with either dell or totally awesome, however dell is expensive. i myself use a dell and i like it and have been very happy with their customer service. but that is just my .02 cents. we can talk more one messenger.

Dell's are fantatstic. I use several different ones at home and in my business. Their support has always been incredible, they've even gone as far as sending techs to my house or met me at hotels/client sites when I've been traveling.

You mention student, which usually means little to no money. The best bang for the buck will be to piece your own system together. You'll get exactly what you need and not have to pay for the name.

I agree with Derek don't buy totally awesome krap
Build your own if you have know someone who can or if you can. You will get much better results and you'll have something to keep you busy for a bit while you build it and set it up.
Im about ready to build my new gaming rig. Im excited

Build it!

I can build killer game / servers for $800-$1200 in parts that would cost over $2300 from Dell and stuff that Totally Awesome does not even carry.

Its easy with modern componets as long as you are educated about what is compatible with each other and you dont have to pay for new XP OS over and over...

I also select the componets I want. You need to educate yourself before taking on such a project but its easy. I can assemble a server type machine in less than an 30 min. Installing XP takes a while longer.

My favorite config lately is Athlon 64 3k+ & 2xSATA RAID 0+1
Fast, Cool (temp) and cheap.

Derek I like the Dreamer 2 case more than that Dreamer 1, the blue temp gauge is neat though..

Cases I like
Case 1

Yea build your own. We have 4 custom built computers that are like 1-2 years old each and they can still play DOOM 3 and stuff. We got our stuff from the net and I think we also went to LS Micro (I think thats what its called) for some parts.

ok this is coming from kinda of extreme environment, and I have a fair amout of usefull info regarding laptops.

Being deployed lots of us, LOTS bought new lap tops. I personally bought a Dell. Yeah they are a little overpriced, but their tech support is the best I have ever seen. Plus for a little extra you can get a extended warranty. Mine has a 5 year full coverage warranty.

Computers to steer away from.

1. COMPAQ absolute junk i have seen about a dozen of these crap out.

2. E-machines junk

3. Sony have had a tendancy to crap out.

Comps I would recommend

1. Dell

2. Toshiba

3. HP

hope this helps ya out !
