How Fast are you? Some interesting #'s

On another forum the new Osiris came up and the discussion turned to why do you need 38bps anyway? 10bps is more than enough to suppress a lane.
Others argue that 20bps is way better and even necassary if you want to with the match.

So I got out my calculator and did a little figuring and came up with this:
Some #'s

at 250 FPS (indoor)
38bps= 1 ball every 6.5 feet in the air
24bps= 1 ball every 10.4 feet in the air
12bps= 1 ball every 20.8 feet in the air

at 280fps
38bps= 1 ball every 7.3 feet in the air
24bps= 1 ball every 11.6 feet in the air
12bps= 1 ball every 23.3 feet in the air

When looking at that people may think well, heck, I can run through that big of a gap No Prob. BUT, its not the size of the gap that matters. its the bps mainly.
38bps= 1 ball will pass through any given point of a stream of paint every 1/38th of a second.(0.026 seconds)
24bps= 1 ball every 1/24th of a second.(0.041 seconds)
12bps= 1 ball every 1/12th of a second.(0.083 seconds)
Velocity is no factor here. the distance between balls varies because of velocity but its still the same time interval for the balls to pass through a given point in the stream.
Lets say your a 12" wide profile when running across the field and you are running perpendicular to the stream. (Meaning Straight across the stream as apposed to at an angle to the stream for the young people who might not know the term perpendicular.) If you can run a 5 secend 40 yard dash thats roughly 24fps. You only need to move a bit more than 1 foot to get all the way through the stream before the next ball arrives. So If you had spider sences you could judge it so that you could enter the stream just as the ball passed through and actually make it through a 23bps stream.
Otherwise, its all just luck.

At 12bps you have 1/12th of a second to cross the lane before the next ball passes through. That doesnt sound like a ton of time but if you are quick and time it right(meaning get lucky) you can make it through. Not great odds but it IS possible.
At 24 bps you would not only have to be Very FAST but also EXTREMELY LUCKY to pass through the stream. I'd say you have about a 1 in a million chance? Not sure exactly of the % but its not good whatever it is. Don't try it.
At 38bps? Dont even contimplate running through that. Unless you are about 1 inch wide and can move at sonic speed.

Along this same line of thought:

If you are 100 feet from the target and he can run a 5 second 40 yard dash:
At 280 fps it will take .357 seconds for the ball to hit the target.
In .357 seconds the target moving at 24fps has moved 8.5 feet. If hes running perpendicular to you, lead him by 8.5 feet and BAM! Splash 1! Cut that distance in half at 50 feetso 4.25 feet lead.
Us slow pokes need less lead of course. Better to lead farther out than you think needed and lessen the lead than to not lead enough and have to catch up to them.

It really hard especially for newer players to get in the habbit of leading the target. You just naturally want to aim AT the target. Learn how to lead the target and people will learn not to try to change bunkers when when you are on the other side of the field.
I'm still trying to remmember (during the heat of battle)that leading the target in PB isnt the same as leading a target with a 22-250 and then I end up kicking myself in the rear after the he gets to the bunker unscathed. Just out of reflex from so many years of varmint hunting I lead the target like I'm still shooting my 22-250. Practice practice practice.

The problem isn't so much them getting thru the lane as the paint breaking, paint slows way down very quickly and is more likely to bounce so it is better to hit them 2-3 times just to be sure. That is why high rate are nessesary because it is a 1 in 1,000,000 chance to get between even 10 bps it does happen, but if you can hold a level and accurate stream it is rare.

Please see this site for deceleration info

a couple things to think about:

the player laying the stream may or may not have a full hopper..

if shooting a stream with af ull hopper at 25 bps thats 8 seconds or so...

players running, can also run and dive and get low....

they can crawl and make it where ever on some fields w/out being seen.....

some players mistake bps with skill........

oldman w/a5

did you just have a ton of time on your hands to figure this stuff out....

I really enjoyed reading this thread. That is way interesting and cool for oldman to come up with that. Me and my friend tried to figure it out but we couldnt. I dont look at this as helping my skill. i look at it as something cool to know. That is really cool to know.

It was something to do on my lunch hour. I was just reading a post on the Osiris and the debate over why tourney players want the highest BPS they can get and it got me thinking.

Just some interesting info. and like you stated there are MANY other factors that come into play when running across the field this was just an example of how 38pbs differed from 12 bps.
