If you think the woodsball v. speedball line is drawn there, you should go play in St. George. . .
Different people are going to gravitate to different types of play. At the end of the day however Rec-ball is the life blood of paintball. For what its worth there is a high end hunting clothing company that is developing a sweet line of paintball clothing even as we speak. While I would disagree that the industry is going to trend away from speedball type play, I would agree that many manufacturers have devoted little time to the development of the recball game. I'm interested in how the SPPL will work. My first concern is reffing. How can a referree effectively monitor a player who is trying to conceal himself without giving away his position? Or do I just have a dramatic misunderstanding of the SPPL? In addition, wooded fields especially with varying terrain pose a much higher risk of injury especially when running/diving/sliding. Finally, what about spectation? Thousands of people who would have never played paintball have started after watching a tournament. Efforts to put paintball events in the middle of populated areas like huntington beach, Mile High Stadium, or on a smaller scale the MWXPL at the SLC Fairpark, USG at an elementary school and from what it sounds like the UXPL at a high school football field have given tremendous exposure to the sport. This continuing exposure is critical for all types of organized tournament play. Personally I play recball twice a week most weeks and speedball at least a couple of times a month. I LOVE both formats and have a ton of fun with both formats. That said, I have met FEW paintballes that once they play speedball don't completely fall in love with it and want to play it more than rec ball. What stops most players from playing only speedball is IMHO money. Lets face it speedball fields aren't cheap to play at, the owners do everything they can to find the balance between a fair price and staying in buisness. It is tough to cough up entry fees + field paint on top of buying high end equipment to be competative.

I went to Spec Ops yesterday at lunch to finally see the video that has brought up so much hype.
First, I have to say props to Rory and the rest of Spec Ops for putting together a first rate video. I don't think hollywood co do much to the video to make it better. Second, I know there are legalities in allowing a person to be filmed. I know two of the Redz old school guys were filmed and personally, that is great!! This video will be sold all over the US and watched by hundreds of people. One solution I thought of is maybe Spec Ops can put in the credits that the tournament footage was shot at the UXPL (giving national coverage to the tournament and its promoters 🙂 ) Third, What is said in the video is the truth. They don't bash tourney ball. The worst thing they say is that the in tourney ball you pop out of one side of the bunker and shoot a lot of paint. Now that can be taken wrong, but at the simplest level, isn't that what we do?? They didn't say it was easy and I can tell you that if you ask everyone at spec ops if tourney ball is easy, they will say that it is not. I saw 3 speedballers WORKING there yesterday. I love speedball, but I also love rec ball. Both offer different experiences and knowledge that you can't find in the other type of play. One great thing about paintball in Utah is that 99% of the time all the players are friendly with each other and we have a great time. I have seen this both in rec and tourney ball. I love both and know a lot of people got there start in Rec ball then moved to speedball thanks to the new fields that opened (Adrenaland and PB Addicts) and the tournament series (Allen and UXPL and RIck and the MWXPL). __________________

There is a major Legal difference in using footage for personal vs comercial use. Since this is a DVD that Spec Ops sells and profits from it falls under the comercail use laws. Have you ever listened to the end of an NFL or NBA game? Part of that commentay is something to the effect of: "use of any part of this broadcast for comercial gain is prohibited" Same laws apply to other sports events and productions. That said I dont think the UXPL footage used is a big deal, althoug some credit would be nice. I would have apprecited more information on exactly what and why they were shooting footage. I like the Spec Ops guys and we have a good working relationship and I plan to continue that. This episode does bring up a legal issue that the UXPL must now resolve. From now on the UXPL will have a specific legal policy on video footage and it's usage, as well as retain rights to player images. I have been consulting with the NPPL regarding this issue and plan to adopt a policy simialr to what they use. So there will be clear and specific guidelines on the use of Images. .. __________________ -Allen Turner, Paintball Evangelist (ret) Owner Millennium Paintball Producter of Paintball Scenario Games Paradox Games Promoter Utah Extreme Paintball League Last edited by Allen Turner : 07-14-2005 at 03:24 PM.
