Do you over shoot?

Bonus balls …over shooting

See what happens when I stay up too late

Recently I have heard a lot of complaints in woods ball about being over shot. As a ref I have had several player approach me and point out other players they have been over shot by. Yet from the speedball field I rarely hear of a complaint unless it gets extremely excessive.

Boys and girls we as players have created this problem and if you will follow along I will tell you why.

First and foremost I know there are a few butt wipes out there who will add a ball or three to a hit player, but by and large I think we have created our own monster and most of the time it is unintentional.

Question: what’s the big push in paintball thease days? it's not better paint or more accurate paint or more accurate makers, it speed …pure master blaster speed. If someone made a gun that shot 100 rounds a second we would all be drooling to get one and try it. We all want a faster marker, 10 bps is too slow, 15 bps is fine but 20 bps. Hey if I could get 20 bps out of my A-5 I would be King……or would I.

Here are the cold hard physical facts kids and this is a major factor in getting a few extra hits after you raise your hand.

For this example we shall use a marker that shoot 10 bps and is set at 285 FPS.
If player A is in the woods and is shooting at player B and Player B is well hidden and is not clearly in the view of Player A. Player A rips of a 1 sec string of balls. Now that first ball at 285 fps finds a hole in the brush and hits player B in the chest. Player B stops and checks to see if he is hit and then raises his hand. This personal paint check takes only .5 seconds.

Now here in lies the problem. If player A rips a 1 second sting of paint then there are now 10 balls in the air and say for argument sake all 10 balls find the same hole in the brush.

Traveling at 285fps ball one takes .50 seconds to travel 100 feet and hit Player B. Player B takes .50 seconds to check himself and to rise his hand, now here is the fun part .10 seconds behind ball one is ball 2 and .20 second behind ball 1 is ball 3 and so on.

So if you are player B in the time it takes (.5 sec) for ball one to hit you and you call yourself out (.5 sec) you could have been hit 10 times…….Now as player B you come out of that brush pile all hot and mad because you have just been overshot 10 freaking times and you want someones head on your gun barrel. So you scamper over to the Ref and complain about how that SOB wearing the red sweatshirt just over shot you. When all that happened was Player A was obeying the laws of physics.

We can’t have it both ways boys and girls. If you want faster makers then we will get hit multiple times even after we yell I AM HIT….. Its simple from the time you get hit until you call yourself out at today’s rates of fire there could be 20 plus balls in the air looking for you. Also add in the fact Player B is all covered in marpat so player A can’t see him clearly nor can he hear him yell because player B’s mouth is covered by a mask.

My suggestion is we as woodsball player’s cowboy up and stop complaining. If it hurts to much then your in the wrong sport. or play pumps only they never over shoot.

PS: if you are one of those Butt wipes that does bonus ball other players…..expect no mercy!!! Cuse you will get yours 😉

Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

Bonus Balls or Overshooting

PR (Big Bear),

As I see it there is a difference between Overshooting and Bonus Balls.

Overshooting happens just like you described, if one ball in a Lane of Paint hits you its likely others will. It happens, and players need to be concious of it and not abuse it.

Bonus Balling, IMO, is Intentionally hitting someone while walking out of the game, especially in the back. Turning your fire and continuing to hit them in the back while they are walking off. Big difference in my opinion.

In Tournament paintball a small amount of Bonus Balling is expected but in Recreation Paintball (Woodsball) it has been my experience that Players do not tolerate any Bonus Balls, that is considered Dishonorable to Bonus Ball an eliminated player who is walking off the field..

The difference in expectations is part of the Oil and Water syndrome that Tournament and Woodsball experience..

Thats my $0.02 🙂
